Сегодня я хочу поговорить о романе Томаса Олд Хьювелта – «Сглаз», согласно обложке, впервые напечатанный на русском языке в 2018 году.

Это роман-хоррор, который подарил мне много неприятных и жутких моментов – впервые за долгое время. Роман настолько хорошо нагнетает атмосферу и настолько тонко играет нашими страхами, что это просто поражает. Я ни одного рубля, вложенного в покупку этой книги, не пожалела, черт побери! Мало того, я бы и в три раза больше заплатила за это поистине качественное и ужасное издание. Давно не помню за собой такого восторга. Одна обложка чего стоит!

Эта книга подарила мне именно то, зачем я ее и купила. Чувство беспокойства и ощущение мрачного взгляда, направленного в спину.

С другой стороны – мой восторг постепенно угас к середине книги, в тот момент, когда мы сталкиваемся с горем, описанным с такой правдоподобностью, что не только портит всю атмосферу, но еще и заставляет периодически откладывать книгу в сторону. Это горе топит в себе, оно затягивает в какой-то гнилой омут, из которого выпрыгиваешь только в финале.

Причем настолько резко, словно на тебя ведро холодной воды выливают. И вот этот финал вызывает некоторое количество вопросов, которые очень легко вываливает на нас автор. Он настолько легко подводит нас к своим умозаключениям, так открыто о них говорит, что в это совсем не веришь.

Слегка коснусь сюжета. Автор рассказывает нам о небольшом американском городке Блэк Спринг, который уже 350 лет живет под проклятьем ведьмы Катарины ван Вайлер, которую убили их предки. Ведьма восстала и с тех пор беспрепятственно разгуливает по городу. Она может материализоваться в любом доме, в любое время и остаться там сколь угодно долго. В 19 веке некая группа священнослужителей зашила ей глаза и рот, дабы не видеть ее леденящего душу взгляда и не слышать шепота, который сводит с ума. Жители не могут покинуть город больше, чем на две недели, они не могут коснуться ведьмы дабы не упасть замертво и не могут никому рассказать о своей ноше. Все, кто рожден в Блэк Спринг – прокляты. Все, кто приезжает и остается жить – прокляты.

И вот, наши дни, 2019 год. Группа подростков решает избавить город от гнета ведьмы и освободить жителей. Для этого они приступают к ряду экспериментов. За ними шпионит организация СГЛАЗ, которая создана в незапамятные времена для того, чтобы горожане не причиняли вред ведьме, соблюдали правила конспирации и «чрезвычайный закон».

И вот эти эксперименты, поначалу безобидные, становятся все более откровенными и доводят до беды. До какой? Читайте сами. Если не испугаетесь.

Финал же меня слегка разочаровал – и не только меня одну – в интернете полно комментариев, в таком духе, типа «я не верю», «не правдоподобно» и т.д.

И дело даже не в том, что ведьма сначала дала себе зашить глаза и рот, а потом никому не давала открыть. Не в том, что в современном мире такого кота в мешке уже не утаишь(привет интернету!).

Дело в той поспешности разворачивающихся событий, что просто не веришь в них. Не успеваешь. Автор так умело нагнетал всю книгу и вдруг раз, как будто скомкал последние триста страниц текста и оставил нас с тем, что есть.

Но с другой стороны, как я и сказала, я не пожалела ни одного рубля на эту книгу. а такое у меня в последнее время бывает не часто.
