Если вы покупаете большую клетку, то важно учитывать, что у нее может быть и большой шаг между прутьями. В маленьких клетках он от 0,5 до 1 см, что вполне достаточно, если мы говорим о молодом растущем организме, в виде крысенка. В большой клетке этот шаг может достигать 2,5 сантиметров. Помните главный крысиный принцип - голова пролезла, все пролезло! И пошло грызть.

Теперь пару слов о наполнении клетки. В первую очередь это подстилка, или наполнитель. Сейчас на рынках их великое множество - кукурузные, древесные, глиняные, целлюлозные, хлопковые, бумажные, опилки и еще черт знает сколько всего. Я пробовала много разных и пришла к такому выводу:

Если вы содержите одну крысу, то ей подойдут, как опилки, так и кукурузный или древесный наполнитель. Единственно, что хочу сказать против опилок - их надо тщательно подбирать по производителю - в них чаще всего кочуют клещи, из-за которых крысы очень страдают.

Если вы содержите много крыс(от трех и более в одной клетке) - то это только древесный, гранулированный. Он впитывает лучше всего и не дает запаху распространиться по вашей квартире.

Если мы говорим об остальных, то глиняный я считаю слишком пыльным - он забивается в легкие крысе и может привести к респираторным заболеваниям. А целлюлозу, хлопок или бумагу стоит использовать только в случае, если у вас имеется старая крыса, которая плохо ходит - ей будет больно перемещаться по древесному наполнителю.

Обыкновенную газету использовать не советую - крысиный запах, это не самое приятное амбре, если не соблюдены все условия гигиены.

И если уж говорить о запахе - в идеале, если у вас одна крыса - то клетку придется мыть не чаще двух раз в месяц. Если говорим о стае, то это примерно раз в неделю. Но. Есть небольшая хитрость - это клетки с фальш-дном. Благодаря тому, что крысы не соприкасаются непосредственно с самим наполнителем и не имеют возможности выкинуть его из клетки или выпачкать его - срок службы одной засыпки наполнителя продлевается на неделю. Правда, сама я столкнулась с тем, что мои семь крыс на фальш-дне и древесном наполнителе начинают пахнуть уже через 3 дня - но это уже индивидуальные особенности стаи - в моей есть как мелкие крысы, так и старые.

Если крысы хорошо ухожены и сидят на свежем наполнителе, то ваши гости никогда не догадаются, что у вас есть кто-то кроме детей и фикусов.

Далее, что касается внутреннего убранства клетки. Здесь полет фантазии на вашей стороне. Можно использовать практически все, за исключением разве что веревок, в которых крысы могут запутаться и колес. Запомните - колеса для хомяков. Крыса является высокоинтеллектуальным животным и поэтому пакостит вам по мелочам. Она никогда не опустится до того, чтобы бегать в колесе(хотя и тут бывают исключения). И потом - колесо опасно для крыс тем, что у них есть длинный хвост, который может зажаться во время бега, и вы получите еще одну проблему - лечение перелома и страха.

Крысы очень уважают домики и гамаки. В пользу домиков говорит более надежное укрытие - крысы любят спрятать попу и наблюдать за всем происходящим высунув морду из укрытия. А в пользу гамаков говорит практичность.
